Examination management - exam setup and preparation

Short Answer Questions (SAQ)

Extended Matching Questions (EMQ)

Building an exam in Ripleys is simple and easy because you have access to all of your questions within one place.

Selecting questions

Questions can be filtered by when they were last used, how they performed, their subject, curriculum, level, in fact pretty much any criterion you specify. Once a question has been selected it is placed within the exam setup matrix. You can add as many questions as you want enabling examiners or panel members to view and amend the exam as many times as they need to before it is finalised and printed.

Once you have all of your questions selected you can email that paper to any relevant examiners to review on-line or in a panel meeting.

Printing exam papers and guidance

Once your exam has been finalised and locked, you are able to print your paper to PDF directly from the exam matrix. You can print just the questions, questions and assets, questions and answers, questions, answers and asset, with answers and without answers.

Mark sheets for written questions can be printed to your normal printer.

For OSCE's, OSPE's and other circuit-based examinations you can print examiner guidance, candidate guidance, actor/role player guidance as well as equipment lists for each station.

Allocating candidates and examiners

Through a comprehensive candidate and examiner management area you can create circuit maps, sign-in sheets, badges and attendance records.

Testing electronic delivery

Once your exam has been built you are able to test your exam in real-time to make sure the timings and screens are correct. Changes can be made as often as you want until the exam is locked and finalised.

Printing mark sheets for scanning

From your Ripleys exam matrix you can print tailored or standard mark sheets directly to your normal in-house printer or professionally printed. Candidate details, station, session and circuits can automatically be printed on the sheets if required.

After the exam the mark sheets can be scanned and the results automatically imported into your database ready for the analysis.

Change log and version tracker

As and when exams are changed or updated the changes are securely logged meaning you will always know when changes have been made and by whom.

Exam usage and statistics

Post exam statistics can be created. The statistical data is shown against the exam and each relevant question in your question bank, so you can see how it has performed this time and how it has performed over a period of time.

Questions can be excluded from exam statistics and optionally from candidate's marks. Answer keys can be changed post exam and statistics and candidate marks changed appropriately.

Examiner performance reports

Examiner performance reports can be created to allow Hawks and Doves to be monitored. These results, along with their attendance, are held in their Examiner record within your Ripleys system.

Paper-based optical marking

Print your mark sheets directly from an examination matrix and avoid any copying and pasting of your questions onto specialist paper. Papers can be printed with candidate details, circuit and question numbers, logo's and your college name. Mark sheets are designed individually to suit the exam you are marking.

Mark sheets can be scanned during an exam for real-time results or later at the comfort of your desk. The system will highlight any missing mark sheets as well as weed out any duplicates. Results are imported directly into the relevant exam and a permanent record is kept here, as well as against your question, allowing you to easily track how a question has performed over a period of time.

Electronic marking

Your exam can be deployed onto laptops or hand held devices directly from the exam setup area. iPads are a popular and reliable delivery method. You do not need any specialist IT skills and the deployment can be done anytime up to the start of the exam. Each day of the exam the system will check if there have been any candidate alterations and proceed accordingly allowing for last minute substitutions.

The devices can be used by candidates or examiners and the results viewed whilst the exam is in progress. Again, specialist IT skills are not needed.

A central control panel will allow administrators to view how the exam is progressing in real-time and ensure that all marks are being entered correctly. You can make sure all the results are in before candidate leaves a station. The results are automatically read straight back into the exam area of your database and question banks.

OSCE kiosks

A suitable question within an OSCE exam can be deployed onto computers placed within stations, eliminating the need for examiners to be present in all stations. These can be easily pre-loaded with the exam, candidates expected, assets, videos and questions. The candidate is given clear instructions and will be guided through to answer the questions in the correct order.

The results are transmitted live to the administrator panel, exam setup and question bank.

Online marking

If examiners are marking remotely, it can be difficult to get all of the marks back in a timely manner. By allowing your examiners to mark on-line these results can be read directly into the exam and question banks.

Ripleys has developed an on-line marking system which is easy to use. Simply give the examiners secure access codes and they will be able to log on and enter their results.

Once the exam has finished and the administrators have checked all results then a pass mark can be entered either manually, using the marks specified from the questions or using a borderline regression method.

Results can be published at a click of a button. These can be printed as a list for displaying to candidates at the end of the day, published over the web for candidates to view, printed on certificates and letters or emailed.

Once your exam has been marked the statistical data is automatically shown in your question bank so you can see how it is performing over a period of time.
